An amendment bill of the “Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (Laws of Malaysia)” was passed through Parliament and was then given the Royal Assent in February 1983. This amendment allowed the International Islamic University to be established outside the restrictions of the Rules and Regulations of the Act and to become international

A draft Constitution of the University in the form of a “Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association” was completed in April 1983. On 10th May 1983, the University was officially established as “International Islamic University Malaysia” under the Companies Act of 1965.

Special convocation for conferment of Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Economics upon H.E Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Ali, President of IDB, Jeddah was conferred by Y.A.B. Dato' Sri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, Minister of Education as well as President of IIUM. This special convocation was held on 21 October 1999.

The banquet and closing ceremony of Ibadah Camp II for students of Diploma of Education, IIUM, session 1998/99 was held on 20 May 1999 and was officiated by Tan Sri Mohd. Kamal Hassan, IIUM Rector.
